Feldenkrais Series
Saturday, December 19, 2009To Be or Not to Be - Symmetrical.
It would be a logical thought, wouldn’t it, that since we appear to have one of each thing on each side of our body, that we are symmetrical? After all, Leonardo DaVinci drew the perfect symmetrical human figure, the Vitruvian Man, that we’ve all seen, probably hundreds of times in our lives. Then there are those charts that accompany exercise machines at the gym - many of them show a squared-off symmetrical body working in flat planes.
In our search for symmetry, it is easy to overlook the fact that we are asymmetrical at our most basic level - that we have a dominant hand. Research suggests that hand dominance can be identified as early as 10 weeks in the womb. So, before you are even born, you are moving in an asymmetrical way.
Maybe another way to approach this question is not to attempt to hammer ourselves into symmetry, but to understand how we are not symmetrical. In that understanding, we might begin to “knit ourselves together” rather than keep dividing ourselves into two halves (often we think of ourselves as having a “good” side and a “bad" side).
If you are curious about why one shoulder has chronic discomfort, or you have pain in your toes on one foot but not the other . . .
Come explore how your inherent asymmetry shapes the path your body takes over the years - and begin to discover, through interesting and gentle movement, how to use yourself more fully, with more comfort and less effort.
Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity.
Most of the “early” lessons are done lying on the floor. You will be verbally guided through a series of movements that will help you focus your attention on how you move - the differences between what’s easy and what’s not so easy for you. By the end of each lesson, many people find that they move much more easily and that they feel calmer and relaxed. These lessons begin to offer insight into how you move that may be causing continual discomfort.
All you need to bring with you are loose, comfortable clothing, a blanket to lie on, and layers to keep warm, if you tend to get chilly.
And, of course, an openness to being asymmetrical.
Students are welcome to attend the class on the 15th as a 'drop in' before commiting to the full 5 week session. If you wish to attend the 5 week session you must register here online.
The Feldenkrais Method – Thinking about Moving
Have you ever thought about how you move? Do you feel like a finely tuned, well-oiled instrument or a little more like a rickety bicycle whose gears are ‘not quite right’? Or maybe somewhere between the two?
Consider your body as a miracle of thousands of moving parts, supported by a wondrous network of ligaments. Your brain orchestrates how these thousands of parts work together – some supporting during movement, while others perform the action of a movement. In optimal conditions, the effort of movement is spread across all these moving parts, proportional to their strength.
As we go through life and are subjected to stress, injury and inactivity, our brains may develop movement habits that compensate for an injury, yet create secondary problems; Some working parts may begin to bear more of the workload than they were designed to – causing ‘wear and tear’ and pain that returns no matter how much self-care you do.
If you recognize yourself in any of the above - come join us for a series of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes.
Awareness through Movement classes are different from traditional exercise classes in that they are slow and non-strenuous, bringing the student to the ability to detect small differences in his or her movement
The good news is that anybody with a nervous system can benefit from the Feldenkrais Method. The FM has helped individuals with chronic pain, Repetitive Stress Injuries, Multiple Sclerosis, as well as highly trained athletes - though that does not complete the list. The beauty of the Feldenkrais Method is that it takes each student from his or her own starting point, rather than attempting to impose a standard template of "correct" movement - anybody can improve or feel better. Any body.
We will host an intro class at 7pm on January 15th and then hold a series of classes on the four Fridays following.
Students are welcome to attend the class on the 15th as a 'drop in' before commiting to the full 5 week session. If you wish to attend the 5 week session you must register here online.
The series runs from Jan 15th to Feb 12th every Friday at 7pm.
Please bring a blanket to lie on (preferred over a yoga mat). Loose comfortable clothing is best, including a layer if you tend to get chilly.
Feel free to contact Linda directly at 848.218.0233 or lindanat@optonline.net if you have any questions.

Special Workshop: J-Setting
Saturday, October 10, 2009
with AndreZ
"If you like it then you should come take a class in it".........The J-Sette Dance Style originated at Mississippi's Jackson State University. The Prancing Jaycettes were the female dance line of the infamous JSU marching band, "The Sonic Boom of the South." In 1970, Shirley Middleton, a former majorette, initiated the idea that the Jaycettes (later called the J-Settes) abandon their batons and begin dancing in formation. This dance is enjoying a "boom" of its own as popularized by Beyonce's "Single Ladies" music video.

The Feldenkrais Method of Movement Education isn’t just about movement. It’s about moving without pain, breathing more fully and easily, having more energy and being able to do the things you love to do because you feel better.
Whether you sit at a computer all day, carry babies on your hip, play concert violin, compete for Olympic gold medals or breathe, the Feldenkrais Method of Movement Education can give you the means to take charge of your own improvement.
Find out how as Linda Natanagara leads us through the basics of this Method.
Linda Natanagara has an extensive background in movement and bodywork. She trained professionally as a dancer at the Juilliard school and Mason Gross School of the Arts, as well as in the studios of Graham, Ailey and Limon. She has had her New York State License in massage therapy for 23 years and has been a Guild Certified Feldenkrais® Practitoner since 2003.
During her dance training, Linda Natanagara met a teacher who helped her understand that movement happens from the inside out - instead of being a shape in the mirror. Her love of movement combined with a curiosity for why people have persistent pain led her to become a Feldenkrais Practitioner in addition to her NYS license in Massage Therapy.

New Dance Studio NOW OPEN in Landmark Building, downtown Asbury Park
Saturday, May 2, 20091920's Asbury Park, NJ - The Sea Coast National Bank - Corner of Bond & Mattison. Built in 1886 the new home of Asbury Park Dance and Yoga is one of the older stone buildings in this emerging culturally dynamic city. Local sculptor Joel Monesson and his team of restoration artists and sculptors spent more than 2 years on restoring this landmark building on Mattison Avenue. Having passed the space frequently over the past few years, APDAY owner Katie Farhat Larkin would marvel at the soaring 17 foot cielings and fine architectural detailing of the interior of the space. Having had the opportunity to work with some of the nation's most prominent dance schools, via her position as one of the publishers of the largest national magazine for dance studio owners, there was no question in her mind that this space had the potential to transform the experience of any student who enters. Work to re-imagine the space from its current white walled gallery skin into an old world yet contemporary dance and yoga space will begin June 10th and doors will open July 1st with classes beginning the week of July 6th. in the meantime, students of all ages can register for classes in the APDAY 5 week summer session via www.apdance.com. Upon opening in the beginning of July, APDAY will host a special 2 week mini session with flat rate classes and students can feel free to stop in and take a complimentary introductory class. APDAY exists to provide access to a level of training and a teaching faculty second to none.
